11993. DE LA MARE Walter.: Collection of 7 ALS and 6 TLS to Mr & Mrs Verity.

1944 - 1953. 13 letters,7 handwritten and 6 mostly typed with first and last lines handwritten, all signed, the last 3 with envelopes, all but one to Mrs Verity. 13.5 x 18cm,all but four using 2 sides, three using 1 side and one using 4 sides. The first ten from The Old Park,Devon, the later ones from 4 South End House,Twickenham. Mrs.Verity was clearly a fan of the author's work and initial contact was made by her in 1944. De la Mare's letters comment on his books and matters related to them and make arrangements to meet for tea and dinner over the years, comment on those meetings, make arrangements to get some books to her,the health and progress of their children and with some quite substantial asides. For instance (1). It certainly is odd that a child should not express surprise at first sight of the sea, indeed it is unusual for a child to express surprise - just like that - concerning any unusual event, apart from being startled. This fact seems to me to give a good deal of point to Plateau's theory of reminiscence. I am glad to hear that you revere the aged and shall remember that next time we meet!. (2). I am most grateful for your oceanic pulstion statistics. You will be amused to hear that I wanted to know this in relation to the reading of a sonnet. This takes approximately a minute ie seventy heart-beats for fourteen lines of ten syllables each, five "long",five "short". And you'll see beats exactly half the fourteen. There are two lines that is,in the sonnets to every watery crash;and this has no perceptible relation,so far as I can see,to clock-time;although I am no mathematician. (3). May I look forward to some other evening, though I am rather apprehensive of the come-down in store for me,owing to my not being embodied in that charming cellist - & with "fuzzy" grey hair too! I can't perform even on a penny whistle. Shall we try a fis-Q first?. The last letter, from January 1953 is when he is "confined to bed" but makes the effort to thank her for her Christmas Card. With a TLS from his Secretary dated 22 April 1954,stating that "Mr de la Mare has put your letter aside fro a "real" reply, but his over-tiredeness persists...". But there is nothing further from him. One TLS from 1945 has a 2" tear but otherwise all are in nice condition. 14 letters and 3 envelopes. £575.00
